 Understanding What Medicare Covers for Wheelchairs

Medicare recognizes the crucial role that mobility devices like wheelchairs play in enhancing the quality of life for individuals with mobility limitations. Medicare Part B and Wheelchair Coverage 

Medicare Part B is the segment of Medicare that typically covers outpatient services, including durable medical equipment (DME) like wheelchairs. A wheelchair can be covered by Medicare if your doctor submits a written order stating that it's medically necessary. Medicare covers manual wheelchairs, power-operated vehicles (scooters), and power wheelchairs as long as specific criteria are met. 

To qualify, your doctor must determine and document that you have a medical condition that limits your mobility and that a wheelchair is necessary for you to perform daily activities. Moreover, you must be able to safely use the wheelchair by yourself, or with the aid of someone else, and the home or setting where the wheelchair will be used must be appropriate for using a wheelchair. 

Types of Wheelchairs Covered 

The type of wheelchair that Medicare covers largely depends on the individual’s medical needs and living situation. Here’s a brief overview of available options:  

  • Manual Wheelchairs: Typically covered if you have enough upper body strength to operate one yourself or if someone can assist you. 
  • Power Scooters: Generally covered if you need help moving around and are unable to use a manual wheelchair. 
  • Power Wheelchairs: Covered when you need a wheelchair to do daily activities inside your home and cannot use a manual wheelchair or scooter safely.  

Process for Obtaining a Wheelchair through Medicare 

Securing Medicare coverage for a wheelchair involves several steps:  

  1. Assessment: Your first step is to consult your doctor to acquire a medical assessment that confirms the necessity for a wheelchair based on your health condition. The doctor must provide a prescription or a certificate of medical necessity. 
  2. Find a Supplier: Once you have the requisite documentation, you must locate a Medicare-enrolled DME supplier. It’s crucial to ensure the supplier is participating in Medicare and accepts assignment, meaning they can't charge you more than the Medicare-approved amount. 
  3. Approval and Cost: With proper documentation and a participating supplier, Medicare covers 80% of the approved amount for the wheelchair. You are responsible for the remaining 20%, assuming you have met your Part B deductible.  

By understanding these fundamental steps and the types of equipment covered, you can better navigate the Medicare system and obtain the mobility aid best suited to your health needs.
